... is not all that straightforward... Yesterday Shawn gave Alex yogurt with her own spoon (because he was to lazy to feed her I think) and it was not pretty. All I will say is that she needed a bath afterward. I find pieces of food days and weeks later all over the dining room because Alex also likes to flip pieces of food off her tray. She is such a piglet. Again I can say that Amelie was a cleaner eater.
Abendbrot bei den O'Connor's ist keine saubere Angelegenheit. Gestern abend hat Shawn der Alex Joghurt mit ihrem eigenem Loeffel gegeben und es das Ergebnis war, dass Alex sofort in die Wanne musste.

I need to apologize for not posting more regularly. My laptop is still broken and Shawn's laptop needs a program installed first for me to upload pictures there. In addition it is quite time consuming doing the blog and the summer time is spent outdoors being busy. A lot of times I simply don't have the time for my blog :-( The picture is from Alex from last weekend. She put the goggles on and watched TV like that.
Ich muss mich entschuldigen, dass ich mich solange nicht gemeldet habe. Mein laptop ist immernoch kaputt und Shawn's laptop muss ein paar Dinge hochladen fuer meine Bilder. Es ist also alles nicht ganz so einfach. Ausserdem ist es Sommer und da sind wir viel draussen und unterwegs und da habe ich einfach nicht soviel Zeit. Ich habe aber meinen blog nicht vergessen! Nur Geduld!!! Dieses Bild ist von Alex vom letzten Wochenende. Sie hat die Taucherbrille aufgesetzt und ist so durch die Gegen gerannt.

I am friends with Uncle Jim (Shawn's dad brother) via facebook (although I like to think we are friends outside of facebook as well) and he posted a picture of himself showing off his new tatoo. In the background was this huge lion sitting around and besides commenting on the tatoo I also commented on the beauty of the lion and how huge it is and how Amelie and Alex would just absolutely love that huge THING! Well, a couple of weeks later we received a big package from Uncle Jim and out came the HUGE lion. He is so big we might have to add on another room or just altogether move. Right now he is sitting in the living room guarding the fire place. The kids are all over him all the time...

Ich bin via facebook mit Onkel Jim (Shawn's Vater's Brtuder) befreundet (ich hoffe, wir sind auch ausserhalb von facebook befreundet) und er hat ein Photo von sich mit seinem neuen Tatoo gezeigt. Im Hintergrund war ein riesen ausgestopfter Loewe zu sehen. Ich habe nicht nur zu dem Tatoo kommentiert sondern auch bemerkt, wie riesig der Loewe ist und wie schoen und wie sehr doch Amelie und Alex der Loewe gefallen wuerde. Zwei Wochen spaeter kam ein riesen Paket bei uns an und heraus kam der riesen Loewe! Wir muessen jetzt wahrscheinlich ein extra Zimmer anbauen oder ein groesseres Haus kaufen. Der Loewe sitzt momentan im Wohnzimmer vor unserem Kamin und bewacht das Haus. Die Kinder klettern auf dem Loewen rum und haben viel Spass mit ihm!

This is what I saw when I opened my door to my office after my vacation in Florida. Here is the story to it: I contacted the CFO for the Case School of Engineering with a little issue I had and he fixed it and so I said thank you via e-mail to him.
He: We aim to please!
Me: In that case I want a sandy beach in a corner in my office with some umbrella drinks AND 10 more days vacation (because this is what I would have in Germany).
He: Be careful what you wish for!

I left it at that fearing I might have gone too far... So when I came back to my office on Wednesday morning this little scene is what I saw. In addition there was a certificate that said: Certificate of vacation - 10 more days of vacation for Angelika! And in tiny print underneath it said: When hell freezes over...
Of course I know of a town called Hell in Michigan - once it will be freezing there I will inform my CFO of my additional promised vacation days...:-)

Das Bild praesentierte sich zu mir, als ich meine Buerotuer am Mittwoch morgen aufschloss. Hier ist die Geschichte dazu: Ich habe meinen Finanzdirektor von der Case School of Engineering mit einem Problem kontaktiert, und er hat mir prompt geholfen und daraufhin habe ich dann via e-mail meinen herzlichsten Dank ausgedrueckt.
Er: Wir sind da zur vollstaendigen Kundenzufriedenheit.
Ich: Ja, also wenn das so ist, dann haette ich gerne einen weissen Strand in einer Ecke in meinem Buero mit bunten Sonnenschirm Getraenken UND 10 Tage mehr Urlaub (weil ich das in Deutschland kriegen wuerde).
Er: Sei vorsichtig mit was Du Dir wuenscht!

Seine Antwort hat mir ein wenig Sorgen gemacht, also habe ich nichts mehr dazu gesagt. Als ich dann am Mittwoch morgen mein Buero aufmachte, sah ich meinen kleinen Strand mit bunten Schirmchen und Getraenken und ein Zertifikat, welches sagt: 10 mehr Tage Urlaub fuer Angelika - und drunter in allerkleinster Groesse: wenn die Hoelle zufriert. Freilich kenne ich eine Stadt in Michigan, die Hell (Hoelle) heisst, und jetzt warte ich einfach darauf, dass es dort recht kalt wird udn ich werde dann meinen Chef darauf hinweisen, dass die Hoelle zugeforen ist und ich also hiermit 10 Tage extra Urlaub kriege...:-)

My future sister in law Lauren has had her bridal shower in Columbus and se we decided to make it a long weekend getaway. The highlight of the trip (beside the shower) was a visit to the COSI Museum and the Zoo (although since the weather was crabby we onlyl went to the aquarium). By the way: I am using Shawn's computer and the pictures I have uploaded do not show up in the preview section of the blog so I cannot provide descriptions - sorry.
Meine Zukunftsschwaegerin hatte ihren Brautschauer in Columbus und da haben wir uns entschlossen daraus ein Wochenende zu machen. Wir waren im COSI Museum und im Zoo und das Wochenende - Ende war der Brauschauer. Uebrigens: ich benutze immernoch Shawn's computer ulnd die Bilder die ich auflade kann ich in der Vorschau nicht sehen und ich kann deshalb keine Bildbeschreibung geben...sorry.

Recently photo artist Spencer Tunick surfaced again with news that he took mass nude pictures down under in Australia in front of the Sidney Opera House. Since I did not have my blog for such a long time I wanted to use the opportunity and tell everybody that I was part of his 'installation' when he was in Cleveland in June 2004. It was 56 degrees that morning and everybody was freezing their butts off - including me! I would have not traded this experience for ONE second!!! I have now the official picture hanging in my dining room!

Letzte Woche Photokuenstler Spencer Tunick war in den news, weil er mal wieder 1000de Leute nackt fotographiert hat (nicht alle einzeln sondern alle zusammen). Vor zwei Wochen war Spencer in Australien und hat sein Bild vor dem Sidney Opern Haus aufgenommen. Spencer war im Sommer 2004 in Cleveland und natuerlich konnte ich es mir nicht nehmen lassen, an sein Photo teilzunehmen. Es war so ca. 15 Grad und ich habe mir fuer ca. eine halbe Stunde den Hintern abgefroren - aber es hat sich total gelohnt!!! Ich wuerde es sofort wieder machen!!!!

Mr. Woofy!!! The raggedy looking thing up front is Mr. Woofy. He has been with Amelie since she was about 3 months old. I don't even want to touch it anymore because a) he is so fragile and b) he is so gross. / Das furchtbar aussehende Ding im Vordergrund ist Mr. Woofy. Er ist mit Amelie seit sie 3 Monate alt war. Sie schlaeft immernoch mit ihm und schleppt ihn mit sich rum (manchmal sogar zur Schule...). Ich will MR. Woofy garnicht mehr anfassen weil a) er ist sehr verfallen und b) sieht so furchtbar aus.

I was doing something in the kitchen and had my back to Alex but the cabinett was open. When I turned around Alex was comfortably sitting in it. Thank goodness for good quality Pella cabinetts from 1957!!! Ich habe irgendwas in der Kueche gemacht und mit dem Ruecken zu Alex gestanden und die Schublade war auf. Als ich mich umdrehte sass Alex ganz bequem in der Schublade. Gott sei Dank fuer gute Tischlerei Qualitaetsarbeit von 1957!!!

Back in the fall we went out to Alpine Valley Ski resort for their open house. We were able to use the ski lift on that day and just in general hang out at the lodge and walk around and stuff. At the urging of Shawn I also filled out a little card and put it in a container. Low and behold: they pulled out my card and we won a tubing party for 10!!! Well, we went yesterday to go tubing. I have never done it before but can attest now to the fun of it! It is REALLY fun! We invited 9 of Amelie's friends over and went down the hill tubing. Of course in the middle of it my batteries in my camera died.

Im Herbst waren wir fuer einen Nachmittag im Alpine Valley Ski Resort. Wir konnten den Skilift benutzen und in der Ski Lodge rumhaengen und einfach nur so rumrennen. Ich habe eine Zettel ausgefuellt und zwei Tage spaeter hatman mich doch tatsaechlich angerufen und mir mitgeteilt, dass wir eine tubing party fuer 10 personen gewonnen haben. Also haben wir 9 von Amelie's Freunden eingeladen und waren gestern tubing. Es war soviel Spass!!! Ich habe lange nicht mehr so gelacht! Natuerlich ist gleich am Anfang meine Batterie von meiner Kamera 'gestorben' und ich konnte daher nicht mehr Bilder machen :-(

Last Thursday Amelie with her first grade class, 3rd grade class, 5th and 6th grade class trained hard to get a show together. The school does it every year and every year the theme is different. This year it was 'Broadway Favourites'. The kids sang songs from various famous Broadway Musicals, like "Annie", "Peter Pan", "The Wizard of Oz" etc. Amelie had to learn quite a bit of songs and they were not easy. The first graders had to wear jeans with a red shirt, one grade wore a white shirt, one grade was wearing a black shirt and one a blue shirt. Everybody did a great job and it was just so much fun to watch!
Am letzten Donnerstag Amelie's Schule hatte eine Auffuehrung. Es ging den ganzen Abend um Broadway Musicals. Die besten Songs von verschiedenen Musicals wurden aufgefuehrt, wie zum Beispiel "Annie", "Peter Pan", "Der Wizard von Oz" usw. Die Songs waren recht schwierig aber die kids haben alles gut ueberstanden. Amelie's Klasse hatte rote T-Shirts an. Andere Klassen haben anders farbige T-Shirts angehabt. Es war alles sehr gut geprobt und verlaufen und es war sehr niedlich die Erstklaessler zu sehen!

Alex has this chicken, which was given to Amelie on her first birthday by her great grand mother (Shawn's grandma). It wears a yellow raincoat and rain hat and sings "You are my sunshine my pretty sunshine. You make me happy when skies are gray...." It sings really loud and moves its beak. The battery seems to be indestructable. Alex LOVES that darn chicken ;-)

Alex hat dieses Huhn, was ein Geschenk fuer Amelie zu ihrem ersten Geburtstag war von Amelie's Uroma (Shawn's Oma). Das Huhn hat einen gelben Regenmantel und Hut an und singt: "You are my sunshine..." Das Huhn singt total laut und bewegt dabei den Schnabel. Die Batterie scheint unzerstoerbar zu sein. Alex LIEBT das doofe Huhn!!!

Amelie's friend Stella celebrated her 6th birthday at this place called "Cuts 'n Curls". This is a salon specializing in kids and parents can 'rent' the place for birthday parties. The girls can get their nail polished and they walk away with a fancy hair do. There are games and of course cake and also pizza and drinks. It was really fun for the girls. Highlight of the day is a runway walk of all the girls so that they can show off their cool dos.
Amelie's Freundin Stella hatte ihren 6. Geburtstag und die Party war in einem Hairsalon, welcher sich auf Kinder spezialisiert. Eltern koennen den Salon fuer Geburtstagsparties mieten und die kids kriegen ihre Fingernaegel lackiert und einen super dooper Haarstyle. Der Hoehepunkt der Party ist ein catwalk wo die kids ihre coolen haar Frisuren vorstellen.

When the weather is cold and s****y we can't really go and hang out anywhere outdoors so we go to venues that have a roof and are heated. One of those is the Cleveland Children's Museum. Over the winter they have one room fully dedicated to just sand everywhere - it is one huge sandbox! Another fun area is a water place where kids put on raincoats and get to play with water. It is not big and we certainly have seen nicer, better and bigger children's museums but it is good enough for us.
Wenn das Wetter schlecht und kalt ist verbringen wir unsere Nachmittage irgendwo wo es warm und trocken ist. Einer solcher Plaetze ist das Kindermuseum. Ein Raum ist voll mit Sand und ein Raum ist mit Wasserspielen gefuellt. Das Clevelander Kindermuseum ist nicht sehr gross und wir haben bessere Kindermuseen besucht aber es ist gut genug fuer uns.

As every year before Santa found his way again to our house! He came through the chimney, ate some cookies, had a bit milk and even took some carrotts back to his deers. He even forgot to close the fireplace door - how sloppy is that??? It was again more than fruitful! We could supply an army of children with gifts but NO - all the gifts were for two kids!
We auch jedes Jahr vorher kam der Weihnachstmann auch dieses Jahr in unserem Haus vorbei. Bei uns kommt jetzt der Weihnachtsmann ueber Nacht und die Geschenke werden am 25. morgens aufgemacht. Der Weihnachtsmann kommt mit seinem Schlitten und Rentieren ueber Nacht vorbei und schleicht sich durch den Kamin ins Haus. Wir haben Plaetzchen und Milch fuer den Weihnachtsmann rausgestellt und her hat sogar alles aufgegessen! Und ein paar Moehren hat er auch mitgenommen, damit seine Rentiere was zu essen kriegen. Der Weihachtsmann hat auch vergessen die Kamintuer wieder zu zumachen! Amelie hat das sofort gemerkt!!!

Chicago - again / noch mal...

This year we went for a second time to Chicago - this time for a true valid reason: I need to renew my German passport and for that purpose I have to go to the nearest Consulate (which is in Chicago) to file the papers. One has to show up personally now since they are also taking fingerprints. It wasn't the German efficency I am used to though. My appointment was from 10-11am and we only got out of there sometime after noon. The one good thing we got out of there (besides me getting a new passport) is application papers for Amelie and Alex to get their German passport. Apparently since they were born to a German citizen (moi) they get to have a German passport for the rest of their lives. This is obviously a good idea since Germany is part of the EU and that means they could go and work anywhere in the EU without having to file for a Visa - they can just go. Can't beat that... So we will def. go for the German passports for the kids. Chicago is always fun! We went to the 'Christkindl Market', to the Zoo and went swimming in the Hotel. The weather was perfect too.
Dieses Jahr sind wir zum 2. Mal nach Chicago. Ich muss meinen deutschen Pass erneuern und dafuer muss ich zum naehesten Konsulat, welches fuer uns in Chicago ist. Ich habe meinen neuen Pass beantragt, und werde den wohl so in 6-8 Wochen kriegen. Man muss heutzutage persoenlich auftauchen, da naemlich Fingerabdruecke gemacht werden muessen. Ich habe waehrend meines Konsulatsaufenthalts auch erfahren, dass ich einen deutschen Pass fuer Amelie und Alex kriegen kann. Sie sind zu einer deutschen Frau geboren und das erlaubt es, dass sie einen deutschen Pass fuers Leben bekommen. Das werden wir freilich machen fuer die kids. Das erlaubt den Kindern vielleicht irgendwann mal fuer laengere Zeit in der EU zu sein oder sogar in der EU zu studieren oder zu arbeiten. Chicago ist immer wieder eine Reise wert. Das Wetter war super (allerdings kalt) und wir haben viel unternommen: Weihnachtsmarkt, Zoo, schwimmen im Hotel.

Lauren - my future sister in law - decided to drive up from Columbus one Sunday to spend the day with us. Amelie is absolutely in love with her and Lauren is just so good in every way. She will be just a wonderful addition to the family! The wedding will be on the beach in Naples / Florida sometime in June. Amelie already reserved her spot as a flowergirl :-) She already practiced... We can't wait to be there!
Lauren - meine Zukunfts Schwiegerschwester (jetzt faellt mir doch tatsaechlich echt nicht das deutsche Wort ein fuer eine angeheiratete Schwester!!!) kam fuer einen Sonntag von Columbus nach Cleveland um uns zu besuchen. Wir haben Tag im Cleveland Zoo verbracht. Amelie mag ihre Tante sehr gut und Lauren ist einfach mal super nett. Lauren wird Shawn's Halbbruder Brandon im Juni am Strand in Naples in Florida heiraten. Wir freuen uns schon sehr!

It was one of these days in middle November where the thermometer went up to 65F and one could not waste that day indoors. We went 'west' for the day to hang out at Rocky River Park, which is right next to Lake Erie. It has a little beach AND a playground - how can you go wrong with that park?
Es war ein sehr sehr milder Novembertag den man einfach nicht so verplempert. Wir sind an diesem Tag zu einem unserer Lieblingsparks gegangen - der Rocky River Park gleich neben dem Eriesee. Der Park hat einen Strand UND ein Spielplatz. Was will man mehr???

Halloween 2009

This year Halloween fell on a Saturday so the O'Connor's invited themselves (sorry again Jami!!!) to celebrate it with our old friends the Havens who live in Hudson - a cute little town about half an hour away from Cleveland. We wanted to see what Halloween is like 'down there' and were not disappointed! In addition to a cute little town beautifully decorated it was also pretty good weather. There is always the threat of snow but not this time! So we went 'trick-or-treating' with the Havens' and some of their friends. Olivia was a corpse bride and Oscar a duck! Amelie went as 'Super girl' and Alex was a cow. Everybody looked just too cute (or scary in case of Olivia). It was fun! We wish we could live down there!!!
In diesem Jahr Halloween war an einem Sonnabend und da haben sich die O'Connor's einfach mal selbst bei unseren Freunden, den Havens in Hudson eingeladen. Hudson ist eine kleine niedliche Stadt so ca. 30 Minuten von Cleveland weg. Wir wollten eben einfach mal sehen, wie so Halloween in Hudson abgeht. Das Wetter hat auch beschlossen mitzumachen. Es kann durchaus zu Halloween schon schneien aber nicht dieses Jahr. Olivia ging als "Drakula's Braut", Oskar war ein Kueken, Amelie war Supergirl und Alex eine Kuh. Es sahen alle super suess aus (ausser Olivia - sie war ein wenig beaengstigend). Es war wirklich sehr nett! Wir wuenschten, wir koennten in Hudson wohnen!!!

Amelie spent Halloween Night at her friend Olivia's house in Hudson. They know each other since they have been three months old rolling around together on the mat in KinderCare. I asked Olivia's mom Jami if everything went well and if Amelie behaved and apparently all went well and Amelie was behaving herself. She overheard Amelie saying to Olivia the following: "Your mom has a lot of rules. My mom lets me eat in the living room and she is my servant." GREAT!!! Although I know where this is coming from: Amelie wants something every three minutes after the 5th time I tell her off saying that she can get it herself - I am not her servant! Or am I???? Apparently I am... I gotta do something about my child's perception of me...

Amelie hat die Halloweennacht mit ihrer Freundin Olivia verbracht. Die beiden kennen sich seit sie drei Monate alt sind. Ich habe bei Olivia's Mutter Jami nachgefragt, ob alles gut ging und ob sich die beiden vertragen haben und es sieht wohl so aus als ob alles gut ging. Dann sagt mir Jami, dass sie Amelie mit folgendem ueberhoert hat: "Deine Mutti hat eine ganze Menge Regeln. Meine Mutti laesst mich auf der Couch im Wohnzimmer essen und sie ist mein Diener." Na super... Ich weiss aber wo das her kommt: Amelie fragt nach irgend etwas so ca. aller drei Minuten. Nach dem 8. Mal sage ich ihr, dass sie sich die Milch alleine aus dem Kuehlschrank holen kann und dass ich nicht ihr Diener waere. Naja, es sieht wohl ganz so aus, als ob ich ihr Diener waere... Da muss sich was aendern....

Amelie has been playing this fall season in the Cleveland Heights / University Heights city soccer league. Her team is called 'Storm' and they are as of today undefeated. Amelie has really come along quite a bit since she started playing. She would not touch the ball or just stand around on the field doing I don't know what. But as of this season she even scored a goal, was a very effective goalie and is running around on the field and just so much more active. It is fun to watch her now.
Amelie hat diese Herbstsaison in der Cleveland Heights / University Heights Stadtfussballiga mitgespielt. Ihr Team heisst 'Storm' (Sturm) und sind bisher ungeschlagen. Amelie - seit diesem Jahr - hat sich unheimlich positiv beim Fussball entwickelt. Seit neuestem rennt sie dem Ball hinterher und hat sogar ein Tor geschossen. Sie ist einfach viel aktiver und moechte gerne 'am Ball' sein. Das war letztes Jahr ueberhaupt nicht so.

Today we went to the Halloween Party at the Cleveland Botanical Garden. It was just really nice with lots of decorations, a folksy band, treats, candy, apple cider and life creatures. The best part was that it was not too crowded. It was just all around a really nice evening. The pictures below tell the story.

Here I announced day two and it turns out that I forgot my camera for the whole day except in the evening so the following pictures are just from the evening in Binz. We went out to dinner and spent the evening strolling around on the strand promenade and enjoying everything. I will show more pictures from Shawn's camera in another blog. / Hier sage ich ganz grossmaulig 'Binz - 2. So we finally made it to Binz and the following pictures are our first day there. The apartment we stayed at belongs to our friends Ute and Thilo who live normally in Willich near Duesseldorf but they also own this place up in Binz. I am herewith thanking Ute and Thilo very much for letting us stay at their beautiful place right next to the Strand Promenade and about 20 feet from the beach and the Baltic Sea - it is the most fabulous location and a beautiful place!!! Binz has come a long way since I was last there, which was still during East German time.
Wir sind endlich in Binz den Abend zuvor angekommen und die folgenden Bilder sind von unserem ersten Tag dort. Wir haben in einem Apartment gewohnt, das zu unseren Freunden Ute und Thilo gehoert, die in der Naehe von Duesseldorf wohnen, aber auch ein Apartment in Binz haben. Das Apartment ist direkt an der Binzer Strandpromenade UND direkt neben den Strand - fabuloes!!! Binz hat sich seit meinem letzten Besuch in den 80ern unheimlich entwickelt und veraendert. Ich habe es echt nicht widererkannt.

The title of this blog is a bit misleading: we went to Ruegen but really we spent most of the day in Berlin and spent the rest of it in transit and arrived only after dark in Binz auf Ruegen. So most of the pictures are still Berlin...

Yes - this is our car!!! We ran out of gas on the stretch from Berlin to Stralsund. There is on a stretch of 300 km no gas station. We did not have to pay for a ticket because technically it is illegal to run out of gas on the Autobahn and the ticket would have been 80 Euros. But the police man was nice and had mercy on us / Ja, das ist unser Auto!!! Uns ist doch tatsaechlich das Benzin ausgegangen. Von Berlin nach Stralsund gibt es auf ueber 300 km keine Tankstelle :-( Der Polizist der sofort angefahren kam, hat uns netterweise kein Ticket gegeben.

Germany 2009 - Berlin

After 4 days in Jena we moved on to Berlin. Not only is it a fabulous city and we like it very much but it is also still home to one of my relatives: my maternal grandmother's sister Johanna. She has lived in Berlin Charlottenburg ever since shortly after WWII. She is 89 and fit as can be. She travels around Europe extensively still, has season tickets to the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra and has a huge social life. So naturally we spent the day with her. So we started the day in Berlin in the KDW (Kaufhaus des Westens) to eat lunch and we met her there. Then we went on to the Tierpark (Zoo) and spent the afternoon there. My mother came with us to Berlin but after the Zoo she had to catch the train back to Jena. We then went on to our hotel and crashed. Shawn though still went out and he claims he walked for about 8 km all around the city.
Nach 4 Tagen in Jena sind wir weiter nach Berlin gefahren. Wir finden Berlin ganz super versuchen aber auch immer einen Tag in Berlin zu verbringen, weil dort naemlich meine Oma ihre 89jaehrige Schwester immernoch wohnt. Sie ist super fit, immer viel unterwegs, lebt unheimlich gesung und hat Saisontickets fuer die Berliner Philharmonie. Sie ist einfach mal unheimlich beschaeftigt und fuer ihr Alter unglaublich fit - mental und physisch. Wir haben den Tag im KDW angefangen und dort Mittag mit meiner Mutter und Tante Hanna gegessen. Dann ging es weiter zum Berlin Tierpark, wo wir den Nachmittag verbracht haben. Danach ist meine Mutter wieder gen Jena abgefahren und wir sind ins Hotel. Shawn ist am Abend nochmal alleine losgegangen und so ca 2 Stunden rumgelaufen. Ich bin einfach nur mit den kids im Hotel eingeschlafen.

On day 3 we went on a little road trip. We went to a little town near Jena called Naumburg and then to a castle right next to Naumburg but in typical Angelika fashion I have forgotten the name. At the end of the day we went to a indoor playpark in Jena and had dinner at a very old restaurant in Jena.
Am dritten Tag von unserem Deutschland Trip sind wir mit dem Auto nach Naumburg gefahren und danach waren wir noch auf einer Burg in der Naehe von Naumburg. Aber wieder mal ganz typisch habe ich den Namen der Burg vergessen. Danach waren wir wir wieder in Jena in einem indoor Spielpark in Jena und dann noch dinner in der Noll.

On our second day in Jena we had lunch in a restaurant, which is beautifully nestled in the hills surrounding my hometown ("Zur Wilhelmshoehe"). The food is good German fare but really the best part of the restaurant is the view. Jena is beautifully situated since it is in a valley surrounded by hills made out of chalk stone (whatever it is called in English). It is a must to go there with visitors who have never been to Jena because of the view. We spent the evening at my friend's Kerstin's house with a good old fashioned BBQ and bonfire and some other friends who came to hang out. I forgot my camera this evening but Shawn brought his but the picture are on Shawn's labtop so I will have to add them on later.

An unserem zweiten Tag waren in im Restaurant "Zur Wilhelmshoehe", was ein nettes Ausflugsziel ist, wegen der besonderen Lage. Das Restaurant befindet sich nett gelegen in den Bergen um Jena rum. Die Aussicht ist echt schoen und immer wieder ein Besuch wert - vor allem fuer Gaeste. Den Abend haben wir mit meiner Freundin Kerstin (vom Abi) in Ossmaritz verbracht. Es gab super BBQ und ein nettes Feuerchen und auch andere Freunde vom Abi waren dort. Es war ein sehr schoener Abend und ich moechte mich nochmal ganz herzlich bei Kerstin, Diana und Silke fuer die lieben Geschenke und Suessigkeiten bedanken. Wir hatten unser 20. Klassentreffen am 5. September. Ich hatte wirklich einen schoenen Abend und ich hoffe, dass es allen anderen genauso ging. Wir haben uns erst vor unseren alten Schule getroffen und haben den Rest des Abends in der Noll verbracht. Es war einfach nett saemtliche Leute nach 20 Jahren mal widerzusehen. Ich haette wirklich alle widererkannt (ausser Daniel Dreier...). Aber wenn er noch einen halben Meter nach der Schule waechst, da kann man ihn ja auch nicht widererkennen :-) Ich hoffe, wir sehen uns alle zum 25. und wenn nicht zum 25. dann auf alle Faelle zum 30. Ein grosses Dankeschoen an Haiko Hermann fuer die Organisation und auch an alle Lehrer, die sich die Zeit genommen haben, zum Klassentreffen zu kommen!

Es war ein schoener Sonnabend (sonnig - wie der Name schon sagt :-) und wir haben beschlossen die Dinosaurier im Zoo zu besuchen. Wir sind alle heil und ganz wieder zu Hause angekommen - bei Dinosauriern weiss man ja nie... Die Dinos bewegen sich alle und machen auch Geraeusche. Die Gerauesche sollen genauso klingen wie vielleicht die Dinos for tausenden von Jahren geklungen haben. Das ist freilich nur erraten aber trotzdem - es war sehr nett. Die Dinos waren auch letztes Jahr da und Amelie hatte soviel Angst, dass wir die Ausstellung verlassen mussten. Aber dieses Jahr ist die Amelie ein Jahr aelter und hat sich sogar vor die dinos hingestellt um Photos zu machen.
It was a nice Saturday and we decided to finally go and see the dinosaur exhibition at the Zoo. We also went last year but we had to leave half way through because my little Amelie got scared. But not this year: she is now all grown up and was not scared anymore. Quite contrary: she even posted for pics with the dinos. The dinos move and make sounds. It is really pretty cool. The sounds supposedly are a guess of what they really sounded thousands of years ago. I am glad we don't have to worry anymore today about encountering dinos in the Cleveland Metroparks lets say... They are rather terrifying...

Alex turned one year old!!! The year went crazy fast and this is really just scary. Amelie started walking one day after her first birthday but Alex has no hurry. She is very close but not yet there. Maybe tomorrow... We had a nice party. We had friends and neighbors over and it was fun. Fun AND exhausting.

We celebrated Amelie's 6th Birthday this year at the Ursuline College ArtSpace Program. There the kids got to do various art projects, listen to music, eat cake and open some gifts. I thought it was quite fun although both Shawn and I were a bit worried because the program is administered by actual nuns. Not that there is anything wrong with nuns but I pictured this crusty old mean lady who would try to entertain a bunch of 6 year olds. But nothing like it. They hired a lady who teaches art and apparently does it all the time. I really think the girls (and 2 boys) had fun.

Wir haben Amelie's 6. Geburtstag dieses Jahr im Ursulinen College gefeiert. Dort kann man einen Raum mieten und eine Kunsterzieherin unterhaelt die Kinder fuer zwei Stunden mit Kunstprojekten und Kuchen und Musik. Amelie hatte einen schoenen Geburtstag dieses Jahr und das ist die Hauptsache.

The trip did not start out well: I forgot my camera!!! So the first one and a half days of the trip are not documented in pictures. But Shawn eventually got around to Best Buy and bought a cheap and easy digital camera, which does its job. Anyhow: Shawn had some business to do in the Chicago vicinity and so we decided to mix business with pleasure and go along as a family. We left on Wednesday and came back late on Sunday night. The first night we stayed in Valparaiso and the second night we arrived in Chi Town. The first thing we did was go to the Shedd Aquarium. I mean talking about congestion and busy. There was a soccer game going on in the same area so parking everywhere near the aquarium was $40. We did the John Hancock Building, the American Girl Doll store, Navy Pier, The Children's Museum, had dinner at the Rainforest Cafe, swam in the hotel pool, did the Chicago Beach, Millenium Park, China Town... very busy. Both Alex and Amelie are good travelers although Alex is a bit more adventurous than I would like. She cannot be still and needs to be watched any second. I don't remember this with Amelie being so bad.

Unser kleiner Ausflug hatte keinen guten Start: ich habe meine Kamera vergessen. Also die ersten 1.5 Tage gibt es keine Bilder. Shawn hat dann einfach irgendwann eine billige digitale Kamera gekauft. Wir sind am Mittwoch los und kamen spaet am Sonntag abend wieder an. Wir haben wirklich fast alles unternommen, was man so in Chicago machen kann: John Hancock Aussichtsturm, Chicago Strand, schwimmen im Hotelpool, Navy Pier, das Chicago Children's Museum (Kindermuseum), Shedd Aquarium, Millenium Park, China Town. We had a nice warm evening and Amelie wanted to go into her pool. This was the first time for Alex that she went into the pool behind our house (we have been to the the public pool before). After she 'swam' for a little while we just took her swimming pants off and she hung out nekkit. While she is standing against the pool she not only peed but she also pooped. I can prove it with a picture (if requested I'd be happy to supply...).
Es war einer dieser schoenen warmen Sommerabende und Amelie wollte ganz gerne in ihren Pool hinterm Haus gehen. Das war das erste Mal fuer Alex, dass sie in unserem Pool 'geschwommen' ist. Nach der ersten Runde im Pool haben wir die Schwimmwindel ausgezogen und sie hat den Rest des Abens nackig verbracht. Als sie sich nackt gegen den Pool gestellt hat, hat sie nicht nur gepinkelt sonder auch gekackt. Ich habe das Photo, um das zu bezeugen :-).

Today we drove down to Canton to be with Shawn's paternal grandparents to celebrate their 65th wedding anniversary. That means they got married in 1944!!! Right after they got married Shawn's grandfather went off to fight the evil Germans and their allies in World War II. Thank Goodness he made it back safely because if he would not have there would not have been Shawn's dad Patrick and all of his uncles and one aunt and there would not have been Shawn! In any case I am still amazed at how two people can be married for 65 years. That is a long time and everybody who is married knows that it takes quite a bit of work to stay married. It takes even more work to stay married happily. I am amazed at myself that we just celebrated our 11th anniversary (which I forgot :-(. That was so far quite a lot of work and we had our ups and downs already. I cannot imagine the ups and downs after 65 years! But really if it lasted for 65 years there must have been more ups than downs and this is good to know. I congratulate with all my heart Shawn's grandma and grandpa! How lucky they are to have been able to spend that long of a time together. A little explanation because there are no pics: I don't know what happened but my memory card gives me some sort of error and I cannot access the pictures or download them. I cannot even reformat the memory card. Crap! Not only did I lose the pictures of the gathering today but I lost a whole bunch of pics from before that I haven't downloaded yet. Well, that is a lesson: don't wait too long to take them off the camera...

Heute haben wir den Tag mit Shawn's Grosseltern vaeterlicherseits verbracht, da die naemlich heute ihren 65. Hochzeitstag gefeiert haben. 65 JAHRE!!! Das heisst, dass sie 1944 geheiratet haben. Shawn's Opa ist sofort nach der Hochzeit freiwillig in den Krieg gezogen um die boesen Deutschen zu besiegen. Zum Glueck hat er ueberlebt weil ansonsten wuerde es ja keinen Shawn geben. Ich frage mich echt, wie man 65 Jahre es miteinander aushalten kann. Aber dann auch wieder kann man wohl annehmen, dass wenn man es die ersten 10 Jahre miteinander aushaelt dann sollten die naechsten 55 Jahre wohl ganz einfach sein, oder? Wenn man durch das verflixte 7. Jahr kommt sollte danach eigentlich alles 'smooth sailing' sein, oder nicht? Aber naja... Ich bin recht beeindruckt bei Shawn's Grosseltern und ich hoffe, dass wir vielleicht sogar ein 70. Hochzeitsjubilaeum feiern koennen. Beiden Grosseltern geht es eigentlich relativ gut gesundheitlich. Wieso keine Bilder? Aus irgendwelchen Gruenden ist meine memory card in meiner Kamera kaputtgegangen. Ich kann keine Bilder mehr runterladen und ich kann auch nicht die Karte neu formatieren. Saemtliche Bilder von heute und von auch vorher WEG!!! Das macht mich echt sauer!!! Bloede Technik!!! Naja, genug davon.

Michigan Vol II - Great Bear Sand Dunes near Traverse City

We drove from Frankenmuth further north and ended up in Traverse City, which is really a neat little town right on Lake Michigan. The first full day were there we went about half an hour west to visit the Great Bear Sand Dunes. Those are sand dunes that are just huge and the biggest sandbox available (right after the Sahara and other deserts). Amelie had so much fun climbing up those suckers. And let me tell you - they are hard to climb: one step forward - three step back. I thought I'd die!!! I had Alex in a sling on my shoulder and it was hot and I did not see the end in sight. I guess it showed me how much out of shape I am. I wanted though to get to the first hump to see what is behind it adn guess what? There is just MORE sand... To see the dunes is just really neat and interesting geologically. The sand has been deposited over centuries out of Lake Michigan and this is where I stop because I don't really understand all the details. It is worth seeing!!!
Nach unserem Tag in Frankenmuth sind wir weiter gen Norden gefahren um in Traverse City anzukommen. Traverse City ist eine kleinere Stadt im Norden Michigans am Michigan See. Unseren ersten vollen Tag in Traverse City haben wir benutzt um ca. eine Stunde westlich zu fahren, um die 'Great Bear Sand Dunes' (Grosser Baer Sandduenen) zu besuchen. Die Duenen sind riesengross (ich schaetze mal so 250m) und es ist unheimlich schwer sie zu klettern weil man naemlich einen SChritt vorwaerts kommt aber gleich wieder zwei Schritte zurueck gleitet. Ich dachte echt ich sterbe den Heldentot!! Ich hatte Alex in meiner Maya Hueftschlinge, es war heiss und der Sandberg hat kein Ende genommen. Der Sand wurde wohl ueber Jahrtausende vom Michigansee abgelagert und ist eben heutzutage ein Nationalpark. Es ist wirklich ein Besuch wert. Amelie hatte soviel Spass!!! Sie ist den Berg dreimal hoch und runter gerannt. Naja, als ich 5 war, haette ich das vielleicht auch machen koennen. Es war wirklich super!!!

Happy Fathers Day

Today is Happy Fathers Day! So: Happy Fathers Day to all Fathers out there. Since I kinda forgot our anniversary I went all out for this one. I ordered from this special website a picture that is made of a picture that I had to send in. I absolutely love the picture and it hangs this very moment above our fire place. The pic is kinda like an Any Warhole theme. I think Shawn liked it as well. This was the gift he got from Amelie and Alex for his Fathers Day.

Heute ist Vatertag - also: Einen schoenen Vatertag an alle Vaeter in der Welt. Da ich unser Hochzeitsjubilaeum vergessen habe, dachte ich mir ich werde versuchen Shawn was besonderes zum Vaterstag zu geben. Ich habe also ein Bild an diese webseite gesendet (http://www.photowow.com/) und die 'malen' das Bild wie ein Gemaelde (wie ein Andy Warhole Bild). Mir gefaellt es sehr gut und ich glaube Shawn gefaellt es auch. Das war sein Vatertagsgeschenk von Alex und Amelie.

Our Michigan Trip - Vol. I - Frankenmuth

We decided it was time for some getaway and we chose our getaway to be Michigan. The "Land of a thousand lakes" and 'Pure Michigan". We started our trip to Frankenmuth, which was settled by Germans and is still very much German today. The town is rather cute and well kept. It is also known for its year-round Christmas store, which is HUGE. 12 months of Christmas music and nutcrackers, ornaments, figurines, Santas, elves and nativity sets. I could never work there but it is fun to visit in July. The pictures below show how German the town tried to look like. It probably looked more German than my hometown :-)

Wir haben uns kurzerhand entschlossen fuer eine Woche nach Michigan zu fahren. Unser erster Stop war Frankenmuth, welches anno dazumal von Deutschen gegruendet wurde. Frankenmuth versucht wirklich ganz doll wie Deutschland auszusehen. Es ist deutscher als viele deutsche Staedte. Vielleicht koente man es auch kitschig nennen - kitschig aber nett. Frankenmuth ist beruehmt fuer sein Weihnachstladen der das ganze Jahr auf hat. Der Laden ist riesengross (so gross wie Globus bei Jena). Der Laden spielt die ganze Zeit Weihnachtsmusik und man kann dort alles kaufen was mit Weihnachten zu tun hat: Weihnachstmaenner, Weihnachtsbaumschmuck, Krippen, etc. Es ist echt unglaublich... Ich koennte sicherlich nicht in dem Laden arbeiten...

University Circle Parade 2009

This year was the 20th anniversary of the annual University Circle Parade right here in University Circle in Cleveland not far from our house. In all these 20 years it has never rained (which is VERY unusual for Cleveland). We have gone every year for the last 5 years or so. It gets bigger and bigger, which is understandable since this parade is nothing like any other parade anywhere. Anybody can participate and people / groups / families come up with the craziest and most creative designs. It is just really fun for the kids since there is not only the parade but there is food and arts and crafts to do afterwards. Amelie made her own paper yesterday. So she learned about paper making. She also participated in a mural that will be hung at the At the Cleveland Museum of Modern Art.

Dieses Jahr war das 20. Jubilaeum von der University Circle Parade. University Circle ist ein Stadtteil ganz in der Naehe von unserem Haus wo ein Haufen Museen, Parks und meine Uni wo ich arbeite und wo ich studiert habe ist auch in University Circle. Es hat in den 20 Jahren nicht einmal geregnet, was natuerlich fuer Cleveland ein absoluter Rekord ist. Diese Parade hat sehr klein und bescheiden angefangen, ist aber jetzt echt gross und riesig. Die Parade wird immer populaerer. Ist ja auch kein Wunder: Diese Art von Parade ist sicherlich in ihrer Art und Weise einzigartig. Jeder kann teilnehmen. Der Kreation und Phantasie sind keine Grenzen gesetzt. Familien, Gruppen und einzelne Leute kommen mit den verruecktesten Ideen an. Alles ist sehr bunt und laut und voll mit Musik. Nach der Parade gibt es Staende mit Essen und die kids koennen ein bisschen kuenstlerisch taetig werden. Amelie hat gestern ihr eigenes Papier hergestellt. On Monday we went about one hour west to the 'African Wildlife Safari Park'. There you can drive with your car through this park and look at the beasts coming up close to your car asking (no - really begging) for food. The animals are HUGE!!! And it is a bit scary... But sooooooooooo much fun! We were all laughing hysterically when for the first time a moose was sticking his head in the car wanting food. Amelie was in the back seat freaking out and I was just cracking up. It was just so much fun. The O'Connor's will definetely go back!!! Preferably with friends to share this experience.
Am Montag von unserem 3Tages Wochenende sind wir so ca. eine Stunde westlich mit unserem Auto gefahren, um den 'Afrika Wildleben Safari Park' zu besuchen. Man kann in diesem Park mit dem Auto durchfahren und saemtliche Tiere hautnah sehen, anfassen und fuettern. Die Tiere sind gigantisch und es ist einfach mal unheimlich viel Spass!!! Ich habe lange nicht mehr so gelacht. Amelie hat im Auto einfach nur geschrien (vor Aufregung) und ich und Shawn haben uns koestlich amuesiert. Die O'Connor's werden auf jeden Fall die Safari nochmal besuchen.

For Memorial Day Weekend we went like every year to the Blossom Festival in Chagrin Falls. Part of the Festival is a hot air balloon launch event, which is pretty neat to see. So off we went this year with Amelie's and Alex's Grandma Sherry and Grandpa Greg. The weather was perfect and to see the hot air balloons take is always fun. Part of the festival is also a fair with rides and greasy food. Naturally we did that as well.
Letztes Wochenende war hier Memorial Day Wochenende wo die gesamt USA drei Tag frei hat. Memorial Day wurde etabliert, um die gefallenen Soldated zu gedenken, aber viele Leute nutzen auch den Tag, um auf den Friedhof zu gehen, fuer 'normale' verstorbene Familienmitglieder. Wir waren am Sonnabend in Chagrin Falls. Das ist eine kleine Stadt ganz in der Naehe von Cleveland Heights, wo jedes Jahr in dieser Zeit ein Bluetenfestival stattfindet. Da ist dort Rummel und Buden und so und auch Heissluftballon Start. Wir haben alles mitgenommen was man so machen kann. Shawn's Mutter Sherry und Shawn's Stiefvater Greg sind mit uns mitgekommen.

I came downstairs this morning to see two huge bouquets of flowers and a card. I thought: what the heck? So I put down my little Alex on the floor and opened the card. It was from my lovely husband wishing me a happy anniversary. I just about fell over backwards (but then I would have fallen on my Alex so I could not do that) because I COMPLETELY FORGOT OUR ANNIVERSARY. We got married today 11 years ago. CRAP!!! I swear sometimes I have a brain like a man. I forget B-Days, anniversaries, phone numbers - just about everything. I feel terrible. So then I ran upstairs to apologize to Shawn and I asked him if he is mad and he says he is not mad. Well, that made me mad because now I am thinking he is not mad because he really does not care. Now obviously I am thinking like a woman. I just TOTALLY blanked out on today. Isn't that terrible? Now giving him a card will just be awkward. I will give him a card but will make a little note in it that says: "The one I forgot". The really bad thing: I cannot promise that it won't happen again...
Ich bin heute morgen wie jeden morgen in die Kueche gegangen und was sehe ich da: zwei grosse Blumenstraeusse und eine Karte. Ich frage mich 'was soll das denn???'. Also setze ich mal eben schnell die Alex auf den Kuechenboden damit ich die Karte aufmachen kann und die Karte sagt: Alles Liebe zum Hochzeitstag! Ich bin fast ohnmaechtig geworden. Konnte mir das aber nicht leisten, da ich ja sonst auf die Alex gefallen waere. Ich habe doch TOTAL und voellig unseren 11. Hochzeitstag vergessen. Ich bin also wieder hochgerannt um mich sofort beim Shawn zu entschuldigen, dass ich doch tatsaechlich unseren Hochzeitstag vergessen habe und dann habe ich gefragt, ob er sauer ist und er sagt: Nein! naja, das macht mich dann sauer, weil ich jetzt denke, dass er nicht sauer ist, weil es ihm alles egal ist. Manchmal mache ich mir echt ueber meinen Kopf Sorgen! Ich habe ein Gedaechtnis wie Schweizer Kaese. Ich kann mich nicht mal an meine eigene Handynummer erinnern. Wenn Dinge nicht irgendwo erwaehnt oder aufgeschrieben werden existieren sie fuer mich nicht. Es ist echt furchtbar. Und es kann nur schlimmer werden, je aelter ich werde. Also neeeee.... Das allerschlimmste: ich kann nicht mal versprechen, dass das nicht wieder passieren wird.

Alex' ears / Alex' Ohren

On Monday was our third follow-up with Alex' pediatrician to see if her ears have recovered and I am happy to announce that her ears are all cleared up. She won't need anymore the antiobiotics that needs to be given to her via injection for three days and she for sure won't need Eustachian tubes. I am just keeping my fingers crossed that it will stay this way. She might just have what I had growing up: many many ear infections. There is still plenty of snod coming out of her nose (of the green/yellow variety). My hope is that will also go away soon. On a different note: on June 3 is already Amelie's last day of school. She will be done with Kindergarten and move on to first grade (if they let her but I haven't heard any different so I am assuming she will move on). I got a note home from Amelie's teacher telling me that Amelie is the only one in her class who does not count on her own in twos til 20 in 5s till 50 and in 10s till 100. She does recognize all the numbers but she won't do it by heart. I was told to practice with her. Needless to say: it freaked me out. I thought they will hold her back or I am a terrible mother for not noticing that myself or my Amelie is intellectually challenged or ... I was very worried about it then I got pissed and now I am just blah... She is only 5 years old for crying out loud and she probalby will be able to count in 5s til 50 when she gets married (my grandfather's answer to everything). I haven't practiced with her and quite frankly I don't know where the time would come from. I don't know how the other parents are doing that. Seriously... So: bottom line: I care but apparently not enough.
Wir waren am Montag beim Arzt wegen Alex' Ohren und es freut mich Euch mitzuteilen, dass Alex' Ohren wieder ganz geheilt sind. Sie braucht keine Medizin mehr zu nehmen und sie braucht auch keine Paukenroehrchen. Na da bin ich ja erstmal froh. Ich hoffe ja mal, dass sie nicht die gleichen Ohrenprobleme haben wird, wie ich sie hatte. Ich glaube meine Ohren waren mehrmals im Jahr entzuendet und mein Trommelfell ist mehrmals auf beiden Seiten geplatzt. Die Schmerzen sind unglaublich. Jetzt muesen wir nur hoffen, dass sie mit den Ohren gesund bleibt. Die Nase laeuft allerdings immernoch wie ein Wasserhahn. Und die Farbenkombo die da raus kommt ist auch recht interessant: so grau/gruen/gelb.... lecker... Kleiner Themawechsel: Am 3. Juni ist Amelie's letzter Schultag und dann hat sie Sommerferien. Sie wird also mit ihrem ersten Jahr in der Schule fertig sein. So wie es aussieht wird sie wohl auch in die erste Klasse versetzt werden. Ich habe gerade so vor zwei Wochen eine Notiz von Amelie's Lehrerin nach Hause bekommen in der mit mitgeteilt wurde, dass Amelie die einzige in der Klasse ist, die nicht selbststaendig in Zweierabstaending bis 20, in 5er Abstaenden bis 50 und in 10er Abstaenden bis 100 zaehlen kann. Sie erkennt alle Zahlen, kann aber nicht alleine zaehlen. Das hat mir zuerst einmal schon Sorgen gemacht: Ist die Amelie zu dumm? Bin ich eine schreckliche Mutter? Was machen die anderen Eltern das das bei denen klappt? Jetzt (zwei Wochen spaeter) lache ich da nur drueber. Wie mein Opa sagen wuerde: Wenn sie heiratet wird sie schon wissen wie man zaehlt. Ausserdem ist die Amelie gerade mal 5!!! Also echt: gibt es nicht andere Sachen die 5jaehrige wissen sollten, als in besonderen Abstaenden zu zaehlen?? Ich muss echt lernen das wichtige vom unwichtigem zu trennen.

First: Happy Mothers Day to all my Mother friends out there! I hope you had a wonderful day and you feel loved by your kids (even in those moments when they tell you: I don't like you anymore....). I havent' been writing in ages because I had no time. Seriously... Alex has been nothing but sick. As a matter of fact just today again she started again with another runny nose. She still has an ear infection and the first round of antibiotics did not do anything so now she is on the strongest antibiotics they have and as of Monday there has been a slight improvement. If that does not do it she will get antiobiotics through shots and if that does not help she will need socalled Eustachian tubes in her ears. I really don't want that to happen but there does not seem to be a choice. I have been sick as well but I can manage. It is just tiring really. Shawn is traveling quite a bit and this leaves me with the girls alone alot and I don't get anything done. I did not even watch the last two episodes of 'Desperate Housewives"... This is the only time I normaly get to watch TV but not teh last two weeks. I am attaching below some pics of the last month. I promise the next time I blog won't be that long.

Zu erst einmal wuensche ich allen Muettern einen wunderschoenen Muttertag. Ich hatte heute einen schoenen Tag - wir hatten sogar schoenes Wetter. Ich muss mich entschuldigen, dass ich mich solange nicht mehr gemeldet habe aber wir hatten hier in der Familie andauernd irgendwelche Krankheiten (besonders Alex) und ich hatte einfach keine Zeit. Shawn ist auch viel beruflich unterwegs und da komme ich echt zu nix mehr. Alex hat eine schlimme Mittelohrenentzuendung (seit ca. 4 Wochen) und die will einfach nicht weggehen. Der naechste Schritt ist Antibiotikum mit der Spritze und wenn das nicht hilft dann Paukenroehrchen. Das macht mir schon ein bisschen Sorgen. Naja, ich verspreche das naechste Mal nicht solange mit dem naechsten Blog zu warten. Anbei ein paar Bilder von den letzen 4 Wochen.

Gestern waren wir auf Ostereierjagd in einer lokalen katholischen Schule (Gymnasium). Das war ganz nett. Schliesslich ist Ostern ja schon naechste Woche. Wir haben auch schon Ostereier gefaerbt. Das ist die einzige Zeit im Jahr wo ich hartgekochte Eier esse. Wieso weiss ich auch nicht. / Yesterday we went to an Easteregg hunt at a local catholic High School. We also colored our first batch of easter eggs. Easter is already next week. That means summer isn't far off - yippie!!!

Da das Wetter heute morgen sehr schoen war waren wir in unserer Nachbarschaft spazieren. Auf dem Weg nach Hause sind wir an einem Nachbarhaus vorbeigekommen, wo eine Nachbarin auf ihrer Vorderveranda sass und im allen Ernst ein Eichhoernchen gefuettert hat. Dieses Eichhoernchen kommt seit ca. zwei Jahren taeglich beim Haus vorbei kommt um eine Portion Nuesse abzuholen. Die Nachbarn haben aus offensichtlichen Gruenden das Eichhoernchen 'Fatboy' getauft und er ist tatsaechlich wohl genaehrt. Wenn die Nachbarn nicht draussen auf der Veranda sitzen dann klettert das Eichhoernchen auf den Briefkasten beim Haus und wortwoertlich klopft an. Fatboy rattert solange am Fenster oder der Tuer bis jemand aufmacht und Nuesse verteilt. Wir hier in der USA haben eine Tonne von Eichhoernchen. Die gibt es hier wie Sand am Meer. Und manchmal werden sie richtig eine Plage. Etwas suedlicher von Cleveland gibt es sogar schwarze Eichhoernchen (vielleicht mache ich ja auch mal Bilder von den schwarzen).
Since the weater was nice today we went for a walk this morning and our way back home we walked by a house in our neighborhood where a lady sat on her front porch feeding a squirrel. We started chatting and she proceeded to tell us that that squirrel has come by regularly for the last two years and they named him 'fat boy'. When noboy is out on the porch fatboy has the audacity to climb onto the mailbox right next to the front door and he literally knocks on the door to make himself heard. He eats all sorts of nuts and is so tame that the owner of the house is even allowed to pet fat boy. He took a walnut out of Amelie's hand (see pictures). That was truly a treat to see that.

Oskar

Wir machen uns gerade ein bisschen Sorgen um unseren Oskar. Oskar ist ein Maedchen, aber als wir sie in unserem Hintergarten aufgefunden haben, wussten wir das nicht - bis sie 4 kleine Kaetzchen zur Welt gebracht hat :-) Als wir aus unserem Floridaurlaub widergekommen sind, haben wir Oskar ganz ausgemergelt, ausgedoert und lethargisch vorgefunden. Ich bin mit ihr am Montag beim Tierarzt gewesen und erst dachte er Nierenversagen, dann hat er umgeschwengt auf Leberversagen und Pankreatitis. Am Dienstag wurde dann via Roentgen festgestellt, dass sie Gallensteine hat. Jetzt ist sie auf Antibiotics und Medizin fuer die Gallensteine. Sie war zwei Tage lang beim Arzt, der sie wieder aufgepaeppelt hat. $800 spaeter isst und trinkt unser Oskar aber immernoch nicht und das ist tatsaechlich kein gutes Zeichen. Sie hat auch viel gebrochen und ein paarmal auf ihre Decke gepinkelt - das ist alles nicht so gut. Wir machen uns Sorgen, dass wir Oskar verlieren. Sie ist jetzt so ca. 12 Jahre alt. Drueckt uns die Daumen.

Right now we are very worried about our car Oskar. Oskar is really a girl but we did not know that when we first named her. Only later when she gave birth to 4 kittens did we know for sure that Oskar is really a girl. In any case: when we came back home from our vacation in Florida we literally had to look for Oskar since she was hiding in my closet. She was emaciated, dehydrated and lost weight. I took her to the vet on Monday and at first he thought it is renal failure. Then he dug further and found out that she has liver failure and pancreatitis. Then he took an x-ray and found out that she has gallstones, which apparently in his 23 years of practice he has never seen before. She had to stay for two days at the doc's since he needed to re-hydrate her. So $800 later and with medication for her inflamation and the gallstones she is still not eating or drinking. She also has puked and even peed on her favourite spot, which are all not very good signs. Oskar is now about 12 or 13 years old, which is really not an age for a cat to die. That poor thing. She has been nothing but good to us. She is always well behaved and just a very gentle little thing. Keep your fingers crossed that she will recover.

Unsere letzten beiden Tage haben wir in Tampa in Florida verbracht (ca. 2.5 Stunden Autofahrt noerdlich von Naples) um ins oertliche Aquarium und den Zoo zu gehen. Wir haben dort uns auch mit einem Kumpel von Shawn getroffen, den Shawn von seinen Universitaetstagen kennt. Josh war dort mit seiner Frau Stacy und deren drei Kindern. / Our last two days on vacation we spent in Tampa, which is about 2.5 hours north of Naples. There we went to the zoo and the aquarium. We also met one of Shawn's old friend from college there (Josh). He brought his wife Stacy and their three kids along. They came all the way from Orlando.

Okay - ich weiss auch nicht wieso aber ich bin nicht in der Lage direkt unter die Photos zu schreiben. Das muss irgendwie mit Shawn's Computer zu tun habne. Wie gesagt, wie sind in Florida und ich habe mein labtop zu Hause gelassen. Das macht mich jetzt echt sauer. Also hier sind ein paar Kommentare ueber die Bilder: Die ersten paar bilder sind der Shuttle Launch von heute abend 19:43Uhr EST. Wir sind hinter dem Haus von Shawn's Eltern (auf einem Golfplatz) um den Start des Shuttle's von Cape Canaveral auf der Ostseite von Florida zu sehen. Wir waren ca. 200 Meilen weit weg aber es war trotzdem SUPER. Ich finde es immer wieder sehr aufregend - egal wie oft das Shuttle losfliegt. Wir waren sehr ueberrascht wie gut wir trotz der Entfernung das alles miterleben konnten. Es war einfach nur super. Ausserdem seht ihr Bilder vom Pool im Haus, Bilder von der St. Patrick's Tag Parade in Naples, welches die zweitgroesste Parade im Suedosten der USA ist. Ihr seht ein paar Bilder vom Strand heute und ich glaube das wars. Sorry nochmal, dass das irgendwie mit meinem Bildern und deren Erklaerungen nicht klappt. Keine Ahnung wieso... SORRY.

Okay - for whatever reason I am unable to write captions underneath all my photos. I left my labtop at home and am using Shawn's - this might be the problem but I don't know. so this is really inconvenient and pisses me off. CRAP! Well, here are some things I have to say: The first couple pictures are pictures of the shuttle launch from tonight from Cape Canaveral. We just went out the backdoor of Shawn's Mom's house and stood on the golf course and waited and BAM - here came the shuttle. It was awesome. We were 200 miles away and obviously we did not hear a thing but it was still awesome to see. I personally am always excited about whatever NASA is doing. I just find it pretty cool. There are pictures of the St. Paddy's Day parade here in Naples, which apparently is the second largest parade in Eastern USA (right after Boston or NYC). And that is for sure: that parade lasted about two hours and was really cute. There are also pics from the beach today and playing out at the pool at Shawn's moms house. The beach is really wonderful but we can not hang out htere too long. It is just to hot... Okay. That is my post for the last two days. Enjoy the pics.
